When you think of fasting, does Jesus come to mind? The gospels record Jesus both practicing (Matthew 4) and teaching (Mathew 6) this vital spiritual discipline. This week we are studying the spiritual discipline of fasting in Redemption Groups meeting all around the area and we would like to call you to a season of fasting for our church’s first international missions experience in Haiti.
This Friday, our team of 18 will fly to Haiti to work with the ministry A Door to Hope for a week in one of the most impoverished countries in the western hemisphere. Our team will work alongside Haitian nationals in the city of Grand Goave doing home construction, children’s ministry and a hundred other kingdom assignments in between. This trip is a vibrant expression of our church’s desire to Love Jesus and Love the World.
Would you set aside some time next week to fast and pray for our team as they work in Haiti? We find in the pages of scripture, fasts that lasted a meal, a day, a week, a month and more. There are innumerable ways to go about biblical fasting but in this instance, would you consider fasting from food for either a meal or a day and use that hunger to remind you to pray for our team? In his book Spiritual Disciplines For the Christian Life, Donald Whitney writes, “Your hunger helps you, serving as a continual reminder of your spiritual purpose…There’s something about fasting that sharpens the edge of our intercessions and deepens the passion of our supplications.” Let that growl in your stomach, that ache in your head, remind you to pray that the name of Jesus would be lifted up by our team as they work in Haiti.
Our crew will fly out Friday morning, March 13th, arriving in Grand Goave by early evening. They will work for 6 days and return to Nashville on Friday, March 20th. Will you choose a day or a meal while they’re working to fast and pray? No one around needs to even know it’s happening, just quietly use the power of hunger to remind you to pray, “God, be glorified in Haiti today. Let Your glory fill the whole earth.”
